About Us

Magdalene House offers residents a safe, disciplined, and compassionate community supported by the gifts received from individuals and private grants. Magdalene House stands as a witness to the truth that in the end, love is the most powerful force.

History of Magdalene House of Charleston

The original Magdalene House began as a vision by Reverend Becca Stevens, the Episcopal Chaplain at Vanderbilt University.  She felt that there should be a safe haven for women on the streets who were ready to live a life of sobriety and health.  Named for Mary Magdalene, the first recovery home was established in Nashville, Tennessee in August 1997 with volunteers from the St. Augustine’s chapel.

Magdalene House of Charleston opened in the summer of 2007 in North Charleston, South Carolia. With guidance provided by the Reverend Marilyn Powell, founder of the Charleston house, plus volunteer support and financial support from the local community, Magdalene House of Charleston has provided a safe haven with an array of support services. With our new residential facility located in Summerville, South Carolina we hope to provide services for years to come!

Mission

Magdalene House of Charleston is a nonprofit recovery home for women facing addiction. We offer an opportunity to recover and learn life skills in a safe environment with encouragement, accountability, and structure.  Our program consists of case management and individual treatment plans that align with the 12 steps of recovery.  Many of our residents come from lives of destitution, abuse, incarceration, and human trafficking and are enjoying the first freedom they have known for years.  It is our mission to help women rise up from darkness and  Be the Light.
